Oct 3 2017 Women in Business Celebration |
The Chamber's 9th Annual Women in Business Celebration is set for Tuesday, Oct. 3, 11:30 a.m., at the Doubletree by Hilton Decatur Riverfront and presented by Nucor Steel Decatur.
The event will feature a keynote address from Lee Marshall, a 20 year local news veteran and CEO of Kids to Love, the foundation she started in 2004 that has impacted the lives of more than 190,000 foster children. In 2015 - the same year she signed off from television news - Marshall founded the Kids to Love Center, which is home to KTech, a workforce training site for young adults focusing on those in foster care, vets needing a skill set to re-enter the workforce, and others who are underserved through traditional constraints of education. The Kids to Love Center also houses current program and volunteer operations.
Taking Kids to Love from a grassroots to a global outreach has landed Marshall on the list of the 500 Most Influential CEOs in the World. Lee has been named an "Angel in Adoption" by Congress and honored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for her adoption awareness efforts. A three-time Emmy award winner, she has been honored by the Alabama Broadcaster's Association for her journalistic contributions.
The luncheon will also feature the presentation of the International Athena Leadership Award to a member of the Morgan County business community who demonstrates excellence, creativity and initiative in her profession. Recipients not only provide valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community, but also actively assist other women in realizing their full leadership potential.

Oct 10 The Human Library HSV |
Read any good books lately? How about getting to talk to a book?! Join AshaKiran, City of Huntsville Office of Multicultural Affairs, the University of Alabama in Huntsville Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and the Huntsville-Madison County Public Libraries as they host The Human Library event that will take place at 6PM - 8PM in the Conference Training Center (CTC) at the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus. It is open to the public although it is strongly encouraged for those 18 years of age and older due to the variety of human book topics. Born in Copenhagen in 2000, the Human Library™ is a worldwide movement aiming to facilitate understanding and challenge harmful stereotypes through one-on-one, 15 minute open dialogues. Human Library books are real people with critical perspectives to share, sharing the goals of raising awareness and spreading compassion. Seven Huntsville community members will address such complex topics as faith, sexuality, and women’s rights and have volunteered to share their unique perspectives and give the reader a chance to learn more about their life as well as the challenges and stereotypes that they have overcome or face. Keep up with the latest The Human Library HSV info on the Facebook page and/or event as they share updates and all of the ‘human books’ that will be available for readers to ‘check out’ at the event! Oct 31 2017 YP Leadership Luncheon - October |
Everyone know networking is critical in a career, but what are strategies where you can get the most from that handshake or exchange of business cards over coffee?
Claire Geno is a business development representative with Abacus IT Solutions who is tasked with bringing new partners to the managed service provider. Using her experience in sales, social media management and marketing, she enjoys seeking new ways to create relationships with prospects through face-to-face networking and social networking to identify businesses she can assist. She is involved in the community as an ambassador for the Hoover Area Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - Alabama Chapter Junior Board, and is in her provisional year with the Junior League of Birmingham. Her and her husband Aaron live in Hoover. She plans to discuss with the group networking methods she has successfully used to build her career while continuing to sustain those relationships in a business environment.
The YP Leadership Luncheon series is an opportunity for members of the under-40 crowd across Morgan County to both connect and socialize while developing their leadership skills. This one-hour program coincides with the traditional lunch hour where attendees can enjoy lunch and develop their careers and community.
We are excited to continue this series for our young professional community and we encourage you to bring guests and co-workers. YP Leadership Luncheon is presented by Ascend Performance Materials.
